Art museums have always provided me with a space to feel inspired, refreshed, and stimulated. Certain museums I have visited caught my attention due to their unique, fresh, and engaging presentation of art. Some of these art museums include Dia Beacon, Meow Wolf, and MAMAC. These museums intentionally curate a captivating experience for visitors. They go beyond simply placing spectacular art on walls but use space in an interesting, artistic manner. All these museums fully caught my attention and gave me memorable, special experiences.

Dia Beacon

Dia Beacon, my favorite museum, is located in Beacon, NY. It features a collection of art from the 1960s to the present. So far I’ve been twice, once with my parents and another time with my best friend, Olivia.

It is located among the stunning landscape of the Hudson Valley in the quaint and cozy town of Beacon. Once a Nabisco box printing factory, Dia Beacon utilizes the features of the building’s original structure: high ceilings, vast open spaces, and more than 34,000 square feet of skylights. Walking into Dia Beacon I was instantly captured by the museum’s clever use of the building. The artwork and structure work well together to create a captivating, unique experience for visitors.

As seen in the image above, within the museum’s vast, bright space the artist, Michael Heizer, created multiple, different geometrical holes in the ground. In this instance, the art was built within the museum’s structure, showing the cohesion between the art and the space.

When I visited Dia Beacon with Olivia, we ventured into the museum’s basement. As we entered the first section of the basement, an iridescent, green light filled the room as the building’s structural pillars towered above us. The display was simple. Dan Flavin, the artist, arranged fluorescent tubes in various configurations to light up the space. Flavin is known for creating art in relation to architecture. The iridescent, green light highlighted the building’s structure. In my mind, it put a spotlight on the architecture and let that be showcased as art.

Olivia and I continued to explore the basement. Next up we came upon a pitch-dark room paired with the sound of techno music. Lights then slowly turned on in specific spots around the room and then slowly turned off. This action continuously repeated itself. The use of sound and light within the space was fascinating. Similarly to Flavin, this artist, Carl Craig, used light to highlight the building’s structure. The sound additionally highlighted the space as it echoed throughout it, showing the space’s vastness. Olivia and I felt intrigued and entranced as we walked among the ominous sounds and lighting.

These are just a couple of examples of Dia Beacon’s uniqueness. It is a truly special place that I highly recommend visiting!

Meow Wolf

There isn’t much out there like Meow Wolf! Meow Wolf is a truly creative, immersive, uncommon, shocking, and fantastical experience. There are four Meow Wolf locations: Denver, CO, Santa Fe, NM, Las Vegas, NV, and Grapevine, TX. I visited the Santa Fe location this past Christmas vacation with my family.

According to its website, Meow Wolf is meant to transport audiences of all ages into fantastic realms. It certainly does that. It truly provided me with a surprising, transformative experience.

At the Santa Fe location, there was a nonlinear storyline one could follow. I was so stimulated by everything happening around me I decided to disregard the storyline and wander aimlessly. This exploratory, interactive space was created by a collaboration of over 100 artists.

Exploring a fantastical house placed within Meow Wolf’s exhibit I came across deception. Throughout the entire exhibit you can touch and open anything. While exploring the house I opened the fridge in the kitchen. As I opened the fridge a glowing light illuminated my face, my heart skipped a beat, and I let out a gasp. To my surprise another person was walking towards me. The fridge was a passageway to another section of the exhibit. My family and I then wandered through the fridge to find ourselves in a completely different, fantastical area.

Each section of Meow Wolf was uniquely different. One room was filled with glowing iridescent objects, another was filled with deceiving mirrors, another was made entirely out of cloth, another was a fantastical forest, another felt as if you were in an alley of a bright city, and so on. Each turn taken transported me into another realm. I was in a constant state of awe, shock, curiosity, and amazement.

The artists who created Meow Wolf used every corner of the space to create a fully immersive environment. They created a truly indescribable and unique experience. If you find yourself with the opportunity to visit Meow Wolf, be prepared to take an unexpected journey.

MAMAC

This past summer my boyfriend, Leo, and I went to visit his mom in Cannes, France. One day we took a short day trip to Nice, France. While exploring Nice we decided to visit MAMAC, Nice’s modern and contemporary art museum. While the majority of the museum displayed art in a stereotypical sense, the museum's top floor caught my attention. Arriving at the top we made our way outside to the terrace where we were welcomed with a stunning 360-panoramic view of Nice. You could walk all around the terrace, which wrapped around the entire circumference of the building. Along the walkway I went up and down stairs, through a lush garden, and past colorful pastel walls painted with cloud-like brushstrokes.

From the terrace we could see the city’s vibrant orange and yellow buildings wrap around us. The city's historic and charming characteristics contrasted to the museum's modern structure. In one direction the city was surrounded by soaring mountains and in the other, by the the glistening Mediterranean Sea.

The terrace’s design and view provided a captivating, one-of-a-kind, and price-less experience. The structure and design of the terrace were the art itself. I could’ve spent hours on the terrace taking in the view and appreciating the museum's sleek structure.

These three art museums provided intriguing, engaging, and differing experiences. Dia Beacon, Meow Wolf, and MAMAC all display art in a fresh, unique way that place emphasis on space and how it's utilized. If you have the opportunity to visit any of these museums I highly suggest it.
